What Can Cause Pain on the Outside of the Foot?
There are a variety of conditions that lead to foot pain. Pain in different areas of the foot can indicate different problems. Many of the conditions that cause pain on the outside of the foot can indicate cuboid syndrome, a peroneus brevis tendon injury, a midtarsal joint sprain, a Jones fracture, sinus tarsi syndrome, or peroneal tendonitis. Cuboid syndrome occurs when the cuboid bone becomes partially dislocated. A midtarsal joint sprain occurs when the ligaments that hold the midtarsal joints together become inflamed or torn. A Jones fracture, which usually occurs during sports, happens when the 5th metatarsal bone on the outside of the foot becomes fractured or broken. Because of the variety of reasons that foot pain can occur, patients who are suffering from foot pain should consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment of their condition.

How Do Stress Fractures Affect the Feet?
A stress fracture is a small hairline fracture that is a result from overuse. The feet are particularly susceptible to developing stress fractures and there are a variety of different types. One of the most common foot stress fractures is a navicular stress fracture. This occurs on the top of the midfoot and is common in sprinters and jumpers. Another type of stress fracture is a metatarsal stress fracture which occurs along one of the metatarsal bones. A metatarsal stress fracture can develop from overuse or poor foot biomechanics and the pain is usually felt towards the middle, or front of the foot and worsens with weight bearing activities. A calcaneal fracture occurs in the heel bone and is common among soldiers who march frequently, as well as runners who choose to do their running on the road. Another common stress fracture that may occur in the feet is a Jones fracture which occurs in the 5th metatarsal and causes pain on the outside of the foot. If you are experiencing pain in the foot, it may be the result of one of these stress fractures. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and plan for treatment.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle
Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use. The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.
What Are Stress Fractures?
Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:
- Runners
- People affected with Osteoporosis
- Tennis or basketball players
- Gymnasts
- High impact workouts
Symptoms
Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

What Is Foot Drop?
Foot drop is often caused by a compression of the nerve that controls the muscles that lift the foot. When this occurs the front part of the foot and toes are difficult to lift or move due to muscular weakness or paralysis. Foot drop may also cause the foot to drag on the ground while walking. This is usually a sign of an underlying problem such as muscular damage, nerve damage like neuropathy, or a brain or spinal injury. While foot drop usually only affects one foot, it can affect both feet depending on the cause. It is most commonly temporary, but in severe cases it may be permanent. People who are finding it difficult to lift the front part of their foot off the ground should consult with a podiatrist who can help diagnose the underlying condition. A podiatrist will also be able to prescribe custom made orthotics or shoe inserts as well as other treatment options depending on the severity.
When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric needs.
Systemic Diseases of the Feet
Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable. Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.
Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.
Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.
Diabetes of the Feet
Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.
Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

What Does the Achilles Tendon Do?
The Achilles tendon is a fibrous band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bones. This important tendon plays a major role in walking, running, and climbing up stairs by transmitting power from the calf muscles to the foot. The Achilles tendon also allows the foot to be flexed. When the Achilles tendon is injured, symptoms such as pain, swelling, and difficulty walking usually follow. An Achilles tendon rupture, which is a full tearing of the tendon, can be extremely painful and greatly reduce one’s mobility. If you are experiencing any pain in your calves or heels, this may be indicative of an Achilles tendon injury, and it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist near you.
Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is the Achilles Tendon?
The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.
What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?
There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.
Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms
- Inflammation
- Dull to severe pain
- Increased blood flow to the tendon
- Thickening of the tendon
Rupture Symptoms
- Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
- Total immobility
Treatment and Prevention
Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:
- Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
- Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses
