Facts About Hammertoes
A hammertoe is a deformity that usually develops on the second or third toe. It is caused by an imbalance between the muscles and tendons in the toe joint. This results in the middle joint rising up to form a peak. In and of itself, a hammertoe is not generally painful. The problem of pain arises when wearing shoes that may cause the raised knuckle of the toe to rub against the top of a shoe. Wearing shoes that do not fit properly along with genetics are the main contributors in the formation of a hammertoe. Shoes with a narrow toe box can force the toes into a flexed position. And the higher the heel, the more the toes are subject to increased pressure. After a while, the toes can no longer extend and they become rigid. This can result in painful corns or calluses. Besides changing your footwear, many patients with hammertoe deformities use orthotics to counteract the toe joint imbalance. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to correct the problem. It is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an exam and suggested treatment options.
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.
Symptoms
- Painful and/or difficult toe movement
- Swelling
- Joint stiffness
- Calluses/Corns
- Physical deformity
Risk Factors
- Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
- Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
- Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
- Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe
Treatment
If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

Pain on the Bottom of the Feet
A person can have pain anywhere on the feet, including the soles, arches, and heels. While there are several reasons one could feel such foot pain, experts agree one should halt activity that seems to have caused it, not walk or stand for prolonged periods, and not wear high or pointy-toed shoes. On the contrary, it is agreed that someone with pain in the bottom of their feet might want to rest their feet, wear well-fitting shoes that have room for the feet to move in, and try gentle foot stretches. Shoe insoles might help with this type of pain as well. If you have pain on the bottom of your feet that interferes with normal functioning, is not getting better, or worsens, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment options.

- Bunions
- Hammertoes
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Bone Spurs
- Corns
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Ingrown Toenails
- Arthritis (such as Gout, Rheumatoid, and Osteoarthritis)
- Flat Feet
- Injury (from stress fractures, broken toe, foot, ankle, Achilles tendon ruptures, and sprains)
- And more
Diagnosis
To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Reasons for Heel Pain
There are a variety of reasons why people may suffer from heel pain. Some common possibilities include over exercising, wearing shoes that are too tight, and plantar fasciitis. With plantar fasciitis, a sharp pain is felt between the heel and arch of the foot. The pain can become worse as the first few steps are taken after resting. Additional causes of heel pain can consist of a heel fracture or a ruptured Achilles tendon. When heel pain is felt, it is important to rest the feet, wear supportive shoes that fit properly, and stretch the feet gently. If care at home does not reduce the pain you feel in your heel, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an examination and treatment.

Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
- Wearing ill-fitting shoes
- Wearing non-supportive shoes
- Weight change
- Excessive running
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Peroneal Nerve Damage That Affects the Feet
What is termed the common peroneal nerve provides sensation to the front and sides of the leg and the top of the feet. It also controls the muscles that lift the ankle and toes upward. Symptoms felt when the peroneal nerve is injured include numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness. This damage is also responsible for a condition known as foot drop, which affects the way you walk. Damage to the peroneal nerve can be caused by something as simple as crossing the legs for too long a period, or even wearing boots that have heels that are too high. It also can be caused by a crippling genetic condition called Charcot-Marie-Booth disease or by other underlying diseases, such as diabetes. The inability to flex the foot or to take a normal footstep may indicate a peroneal nerve injury. It is not always easy to detect this type of injury, so making an appointment with a podiatrist is suggested for a thorough examination. Treatment may vary depending on the location and severity of the injury.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.
What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
- Numbness
- Sensation loss
- Prickling and tingling sensations
- Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
- Muscle weakness
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
