What Is Causing Your Ankle Pain?

Ankle pain is a common problem that can make walking difficult and limit your daily activities. It may be caused by an injury, such as a sprain, which happens when the ligaments are stretched or torn. Overuse, arthritis, tendonitis, and fractures can also lead to ankle discomfort. Some people experience chronic ankle instability after repeated injuries, making the ankle feel weak or prone to rolling. Ignoring ankle pain can lead to more serious problems, including long-term joint damage. Early treatment is important. While rest, compression, and elevation may help mild injuries, persistent pain should be evaluated by a podiatrist. If you have ankle pain that does not improve, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend treatment options such as targeted exercises, custom orthotics, or bracing.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

How to Find the Right Shoe Size

Wearing properly fitted shoes is essential for foot health and overall comfort. To determine the correct shoe size, start by measuring both feet in the evening when they are likely to be at their largest. Place a sheet of paper on a hard floor and stand with full weight evenly distributed. Trace the outline of each foot and measure the length from the heel to the longest toe. Measuring the width at the widest part of the foot provides additional accuracy. Compare these measurements with a reliable sizing chart, keeping in mind that sizes may vary between brands. Ensuring a thumb’s width of space between the longest toe and the shoe’s edge prevents crowding. Selecting shoes that match both length and width measurements helps maintain comfort and reduce foot-related issues. Foot pain can develop from wearing the wrong size shoes. If this applies to you, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, in addition to providing help in determining your correct shoe size.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.

Flat Feet Are Not Always a Problem

Flat feet often get a bad reputation, but having low or no arches is not necessarily a medical issue. Many people with flat feet experience no pain, move just fine, and never need treatment. In fact, arches vary widely. Some people have naturally lower arches, and that is perfectly normal. One common myth is that flat feet always cause pain or lead to joint problems. While some people may develop discomfort due to wearing improper footwear or overuse, many with flat feet live pain-free. Another myth is that everyone with flat feet needs orthotics. In reality, treatment is only needed if symptoms arise, such as pain, fatigue, or instability. However, if you have painful flat feet, and it is affecting your mobility, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for intervention.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Gout in Children and Teenagers

Gout is a rare condition in children and teenagers that occurs when uric acid builds up in the bloodstream and forms crystals in the joints. This leads to sudden, intense pain and inflammation, commonly in the big toe but also in other joints like the knees or ankles. The primary causes of gout in young people are genetic factors that cause the body to produce too much uric acid or fail to eliminate it properly. Other contributing factors may include obesity, kidney problems, or a diet high in purines found in foods such as red meat and seafood. Symptoms of gout in children and teenagers include severe joint pain, swelling, redness, and warmth around the affected area. If untreated, gout can lead to recurring attacks and long-term joint damage. If your child has symptoms of gout, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Associates, PLLC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.
